Hi all, I forget the name of this one, I had it written down somewhere... but lost it... Something like Chinese Sun Tree, but couldn;t find a google pic matching this name... bugger.

ummm, when i moved into my new place it was a plant that was stuck in by the builders, i didn't want it there so of course, dug it up, chopped it down and stuck it in a pot! what else??

It was about 6' tall in the ground, now about 50cm after today's work. Lucky to find this awesome nebari. Awesome autumn colour too.

Anyways, it is this plant that was the guinea pig for my NEW DREMEL!!!

Anyways, it took a little time to get used to the carving, however, I got there.

Just showing off the carving for now. I intend to have these three off centre branches grow out, develop foliage pads on the ends, thicken up and look wonderful, in time. I KNOW!!! they are the wrong thickness for their respective heights, however I am sure this will rectify in about a hundred years.

There are heaps planted around the streets near my joint for my inspiration.

could you post some close ups of the leaves for us so we can have a closer look and help you out.

i think it might be a brazilian rain tree... can't really tell from the pics though

hi marc do these also have yellow berries at some stage? if so i think its an amelia tree. if so i think the growth is a bit course and may need to be on the large side to be credible. yet to see one of these as bonsai. could be very nice in blossom and berry though. dremel away, looks you've got the hang of it there now just need to see if the tree liked it now.

But Anttal, yes, yellow berries. It also has pink flowers which turn into yell berries, so somehow both right!!

Yes Anttal, I agree, I see it as a larger tree, who knows in the end, maybe 80cm-100cm in the end, we'll see.

The leaves and the bark made me think at first of "Koelreuteria paniculata", what we call "savonnier" in French (soap tree) and it's Golden Rain Tree in english. And the leaves of the Brazilian rain tree don't seem dented like the ones on your tree (from what I could see on the web, they don't grow over here). Also, it doesn't seem to have thorns.

But if you say that the flowers are pink, it can't be, which is surprising to me because apart from that, your tree look exactly the same as the one I have in my garden...

I think Antonio might be onto something: what about Melia azedarach? I know that they're a relatively common street tree in many parts of Melbourne. Given their Winter silhouette with the pale yellow fruits, I've often thought about them as a Bonsai specimen too...

there the ones fly thanks for that. probogate easy by seed but again i stress the growth is very course.

I have a golde rain tree. the compound leaves look like the photo i have attached. is this what the leaves of your tree look like?

they make good bonsai, I have a mate in mildura who grew them. I would cut lower and start to add some movement in it.

With a compound leaf I would not go too short.
It will look like an overgrown fern.

Oh yeah, but it needs some movement. I think that its possible to defoliate, but Ill find out when I go visit my mate.
They do bark up and are very hardy, in fact so hardy the ones my mate has did not get watered for 7 years other than the annual rain fall, and thats in Mildura.

they back bud and respond well to hard pruning carried out during the growing season. beacuse of the compound leaves they are better as a larger bonsai. similar to the way ash trees are grown as large trees
