In recent years is has become a bit of a tradition for the Bonsai Society of Victoria to start the year with some discussion and demonstrations with Australian Natives. The photos were quick snaps with my phone (sorry about the poor quality)
Many native species on display were discussed,
-What natives make good bonsai
-How they are developed and cared for (also covering soils and fertilizers)

The demonstration was an overhaul of this root over rock group of leptospermum (coastal tea tree) Two new trees were added to the composition which was transferred to a freeform pot using new soil, moss and muck. The pot is deliberately raised and propped up on one end which was an interesting and adventurous move and is sure to set this apart from the conventional plantings. With some serious wiring and pruning in the near future, the new angle of the rock and the fast recovery expected from this species this will be very nice very soon

Here are a few better pictures of some of my favorite natives which were up for discussion. The kunzea (this photo is 9 months old) was the subject of the demonstration in Jan 2010 and has come along in leaps and bounds.

Both Kunzeas are very fine indeed. Thanks for posting.

I particularly liked the first one. What is it? How long do you need to keep the wires on before the branches set?

The first is melaleuca bracteata
The second leptospermum (tea tree)
The third melaleuca styphelioides (I think)
The fourth is a kunzea (tick bush)


Wire has been left on for more than a year already I believe

The Kunzea rock planting is inspiring
