G'day

I went for a drive to my local nursery today to have a crack at some more aussie natives. I picked up afew tube-stock of banksia, tea tree and some euc's.
As I was leaving I seen some 6ft + gingkos for only $15 so I bought 1. They have 6 or so left.

The top half of the tree has heaps of growth and the bottom half is bare. I was thinking of air-layering the top but will the bottom die if theres no branches below the air-layer ? Where im thinking of layering is only 10mm. Has anyone layered a gingko before with success ? And how do cuttings go ?

Otherwise i'd just tip the top and hope for buds down below. And take a heap of cuttings.

Gingko is easy from cuttings. I usually do hardwood cuttings in winter when theres no leaves but they should also strike quicker in summer as long as you can keep the humidity to stop the leaves dehydrating - mist bed, possibly the plastic bag humidity tent? Last year I noted the thicker cuttings (finger thick) produced better roots quicker than thinner ( thinner than a pecil) pieces.
Should also layer quite readily but I haven't done it.

Gingko will shoot back readily from bare wood so you should be able to cut your trees down to whatever size you like.
Roots tend to be few, thick, long roots rather than lots of fine feeder roots close to the trunk so it will be interesting to see what yours are like. I have found it will tolerate severe root pruning.

Most of the good Japanese Ginkgo have come from cutting back to a stump and then regrown.

Also take root cuttings as the Ginkgo can be done that way as well.

It had never occurred to try root cuttings so thanks for that info Grant. Something else to try this winter.
