I went out to see a customer today and as I was discussing his issues, I couldnt help but notice a tree hidden in amongst some shrubbery, on closer inspection, I discovered a varigated maple and with a look of astonishment, I had air layered three nice thick branches

, maybe I should have asked the customer first

.
Anywaaays, I shall return in a couple of months to check on progress and hopefully have a few nice starter plants.
Any advice or tips for varigated, or do I treat em as I do other maples?
Cheers

Hi BM, your tree is "Acer negundo" and i have treated them the same as palmatum. I have found they are prone to a little bit of dieback and do not like hot winds at all. It should be grown protected.

The tree looks like a palmatum variety, not acer negundo. If it is palmatum it will be easier than negundo to make into bonsai. Negundo has a much larger leaf than palmatum.
Here's a negundo leaf so you can see the difference.

I have taken some cuttings from a Variegated Japanese maple form a bloke at school.
They are still green so hopefully they will be good.
Def Japanese maple but variegated with pink and white leaves

I think I have discovered what it may be.....Acer heldreichii aka Heldreichs maple, If you do a google image search you will see the leaves look very similar in shape. What do you think?

after talking with same friends and looking at your replies, I am leaning towards Luke308's answer, acer heindrechii also known as the greek or balkan maple, this being a varigated form.
Fingers crossed that the air layerings take as it is quite a pretty tree with mottled bark as well.
Of course, if anyone has a definitave answer, i will retract all of the above and blame it on the vb
