When to sever air-layers and plant cuttings???

Hi guys and gals,

I am curious about air-layering as I set 3 layers on a 1.8m tall liquidamber in mid November. I used the split pot method with sphagnum moss and diatomite/pine chips above and below the sphagnum. I was wondering how long I should leave it, or more importantly, how long is too long to leave it before severing? I was thinking of severing during winter, but I thought I would ask for others experiences.

I also have a heap of cuttings, most were started in September, but some were done in November, and I was wondering when would be safe to plant them in a bigger container? Is there any special treatment for transplanting cuttings? I imagine the roots would be tender like a new air layer or are they more established? All my cuttings are of Japanese maple, and Trident maple plus a couple of liquidambar.

I also have a heap of new growth that has just hardened off on a trident maple, is it too late to take more cuttings?? If not how long should I leave them for or should I leave them until spring before re-potting??
Hope someone can help.
Thanks heaps,
Luke

I gave up on air layering liquid ambar - took months and months. Usually the safe way is to check there are plenty of roots before severing  With cuttings I always wait until there are plenty of new shoots - don't lift them to check as you can damage the roots. If you wait a few months then you know they will have plenty of roots.

Usually you will see them trying to poke out the bottom of the pot.
good luck with Liquidambar, I do not know of anyone successfully layered one.
