You can just get the right paper work done and you can import them. I have two from Japan. You will have to watch out they treat them with Methyl Bromide it can cause some problems.
One I have, (they were given to me by a friend) has a problem with it, the other does not.
They are acclimatising well apart from that. I will be bare rooting it again and treating with Auxin's ( aka Superthrive ). Pup

When I do that there is a large fee per tree.
If you are serious ask the quarantine department. They are the ones that have the information.
Imports of Maples Azaleas are allowed if you have the right paper work.
Conifers are more restrictive. All trees have to go through the Quarantine Department.
If Western Australia will let them in so should all others States. Ask they will tell you what you need to know.
Seeing as you have in the past found some very interesting facts ( visa vee ) Bonsai focus. I am sure you can manage a little foray into a government autocracy.

It has just been pointed out that, I might have led you to believe you just get them inspected at the Airport and you bring them in.
NOT so they have to spend time in Quarantine. Depending on the species, Azaleas and Maples 3--4 months Conifers 2 years Elms and Fruit trees no way. All the trees you bring in MUST be BARE rooted, then are treated with Methyl Bromide so be sure they can handle it. As I have said one that I was given is struggling the other one is fine( touch wood . The more you bring the cheaper it is, but be aware all care taken no responsibility accepted.
I hope that has cleared up any confusion, I may have caused. The other thing is, there are lots of other trees, you can bring in Just ask for a list. Pup

you should be able to import trident maple without too much hassle. I have imported before several large figs (tigerback,retusa) without issue . Before you decide you will need to organise things like.
'
Freight charges
quarantine permit
customs broker ( to deal with customs and associated paperwork and ensure your tree reaches the approved quarantine facilty)
quarantine faciltity (3 months holding period after been treated with methyl bromide). each tree will cost you a certain amount each day depending on the space it takes up)

Your importer will need to completely bareroot the tree and clean soil off and dip roots in a gelly sloution which hardens to keep the roots moist. I think cocunut husk etc is prohibited now. your importer will also need to display on the crate the required paperwork you need to send them (copy of the permit, exact scientific name, when it has come from and where it is going, post sanitary certificate from PR china)
if any of these are not correct especially soil found or pests disease, quarantine has the right to either destroy on the spot, ship tree back at your expence. The main thing is know whoever you are dealing with that they are aware of your country requirements. Also timing is important as the tree needs to be barerooted so winter over there best time if decidious but that also means middle of summer here in a controlled hothouse.

Personally,as an amateur, I don't have that gut to import.................Imports are for commercial purpose only............I think.

I'm being real friendly to Pup. He might introduce me to his friend that brings them in and then gives them to him as gifts

I don't know about China, but imports of maples from Japan are now prohibited in Europe.
The culprit ? Anoplophora glabripennis.

8.000 trees had to be destroyed in the US and here in france, several specimens have been collected in three different places, one not far from where I live. They come from eggs in bonsai, and also from the wood of pallets in which larvae can be found.
