Could some one please id this tree for me it is growing wild were i work and i have the opportunity to collect it . I will wait until next spring if it turns out to be suitable for bonsai . Thanks in advance.

Kunzea ambigua? If so it doesn't back bud well at all.

not confident but possibly a form of melaleuca? there was one like this at an old place off mine

Pretty sure joel is spot on its a Kunzea ambigua (tick bush) very common in sydney . doesnt back bud on old wood so im not going to bother its a pity cos the one i was going to collect had at least a 6 inch trunk with amazing taper .

all may not be as bad as not being able to back bud, not that I have worked with this species but I am sure that grafting in branches would possibly work a treat. back budding is good but grafting when done right can work so well as it puts branches exactly where you want it
