Here are a couple of overall pics of one of the benches at the Cairns bonsai show. It was an interesting display and it was very nice to meet the enthusiastic members of the Cairns club who were very welcoming and even let me put a couple of my figs on display at short notice (and as a visitor because I had not even joined yet when I rocked up).

The most common bonsai displayed were Temple bells (Wrightia religiosa) and the most common style was exposed root semi-cascade temple bell. This tree and style has been popularised by one of the champions of the club who hails from Singapore. The Chinese junipers and black pines on display were very healthy which was a welcome surprise considering the tropical climate. There were surprisingly few figs on display and I was told that this was because most local fig bonsai were either quite large and difficult to move to the show or had been displayed before.

If you are visiting Cairns and have time to drop in to a meeting of the Cairns bonsai club I recommend it as they are very friendly and welcoming.

Hi,

This Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of November 2012 is the Cairns Bonsai Society Inc. 19th Annual Show at the Cairns CWA Hall on Groves Street. The opening hours are approximately 10 am to 4 pm both days. Last years show was worth a visit and there were plenty of pots and trees for sale in the sales area out the front.

If you are driving to Cairns to visit the show and need to convince your boyfriend/girlfriend/kids/in-laws etc. tell them there are several markets on this weekend between Gordonvale and Port Douglas and your are going just for them.

cheers

Ash

Hi Ash,
Can you please put some photos from your Show up - so we in the cooler Southern part can see what you guys have got up there in the lovely warmer climate, thanks. My better half and I have seen Lorraine’s collection earlier in the year during our visit to Cairns.
Cheers, Rudi

Hi,

Our photographer took images of all the trees but I have not made it back to a CBS meeting since the show to get copies of them to post. Will try soon.
