I was browsing and came across this thread and was mesmerised

Has there been any follow up and how are they going now. Does anyone know the difference between normal azaleas we see here in Aussie and the Satsuki we see on overseas sites??? They have the most tremendous single trunks on them and it's obvious it's nothing to do with age as these ones are 100 years old!! Are the Satsuki a totally different type of azalea?? I'd love one with a trunk of any size...

Satsuki azalea originated in Japan, Satsuki azalea is a member of the genus Rhododendron, produces flowers in multiple colors on the same plant, I think thats right, there might be more to it

Its purely the way they are grown. All azalea's are naturally basally dominant, meaning that they will tend to produce many trunks from the base. Everything you get from a nursery or out of a garden will be a shrub with lots of skinny trunks but the ones you see on the japanese web sites have been grown specifically for bonsai so they have always been pruned to a single trunk. All they're energy has been restricted to that one trunk and they can become quite massive with time.

Hi Loretta,
Just to give you (and everyone else) an update on those Azaleas; they are all potted/boxed up and on all of them we can see new buds appearing. The next step is to prune the stumps we don't need or are too damaged. We have to use some powertools for that. This will take up a fair bit of time.
After all that we just let them grow for a season so the rootsystem can recover.
Cheers,
Chris

If there are some plants going from between one or two hundred dollars and they have a decent neberi will you be prepared to pack them up and send them interstate as I would be very interested in one or two.
thanks Loretta
I forgot to add...my sister has azaleas in her garden on the Gold Coast...she has been there 30 years and they were there long before her...so I'm desperately trying to sponge a couple from her

Are there any signs of variety?
Am I too late for the selling of wonderful stock?

Hi all,
I'm sure you are all looking forward to see what is going on with our giant Azaleas?
Today we spent a couple hours cleaning up the bases and prune the canopies. There are some gems in there. I hope to have 2 of them ready in a couple of years to send to Canberra. So Grant and Leigh make some space! I will get some pots in the next few months for them, some of them will be 130cm!
I took some pics and will share them with you all....because I'm such a nice guy.
Enjoy and please feel free to come to the nursery to see them up close and personal.
Cheers,
Chris
