Hi Tim,
I have no issues repotting tridents now at all. I think last year I did it in mid June with this forest and it never had any issues. I also did some Chinese Elms on the weekend and I'm super comfortable they will all be fine. Both species are very forgiving (as you know!). I should also add that I am very close to the CBD and in the 20+ years I have been here I remember maybe one frost ... and even that was mild in it's severity so that might be something to consider, but even so I think I would still feel OK about doing root work on tridents at this time of the year around Melbourne. I expect no issues at all.

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm in the south eastern suburbs and we don't get much more than some cold nights, so i'm not concerned at all about frosts. I'll get started on mine soon then!

It's that time of the year again. I noticed a few buds already popping on a couple of Chinese Elm so thought I'd better get serious with the repotting. Today it was this one's turn... nothing really new in this post - just a recording after a year to stick in the progression.

I decided to flatten out the hump a little, but apart from that - most things stayed pretty much as they were. I plan to continue encouraging some more verticality in a few of the bigger trees to get a bit more height differentiation ... apart from that, just grow and develop. I might try and curb the moss development ... it was a bit out of control this year!

Running out of stuff to do during lockdown so I thought I'd get this forest out and give it a bit of love before I decide on whether or not to repot in a month or so. Just a clean up and trim back, nothing particularly exciting...

In the spirit of keeping my threads updated, here's a few pics of this morning's repot on this trident forest. Not a lot of change really, the roots are all nicely matted together which makes repotting a much simpler animal as they all just stay in position while you cut the excess off around them.

Looks great Ryan. Did you lose any? I've found some of my forests seem to just dump the really thin trees...

All still present and accounted for Mel, I haven't had any issues yet. So far so good! :fc:

I'll give it another couple of years, I guess, with some additions. :)

About 2 months since the repot and today it was time to check the growth ... really just looking to open up the canopy to allow more light/air flow through it and encourage development in buds closer to the trunks. It's not rocket science, but it is time consuming!
