For some reason I've only seen this post now as I have a little Sunday evening poke around ausbonsai!

I would like to say that you have done what is in my opinion an absolutely fantastic job with this tree. I love it. It really works well for me. Well done sir!

I do have one comment on the pot, and perhaps its just the photography, but, to me the pot looks shiny, and this is the only aspect that detracts from the tree in my eyes. If I were you, (and I'm not) I toy with the idea of having the pot lightly sand blasted to take the shine of it. Just food for thought.

this is the tree that changed me from the son of a bonsai enthusiast to a full blown obsessive small tree freak about 6 months ago.
Inspirational and amazing to watch a nice long term progression.

Gee, how come I missed the posting of this 15th of Aug.update... it's one of the bonsai that always stays in my memory.
I must be jettisoning a few marbles, if you see what I mean. Anyway, that tree is just going from strength to strength and I hope it will appear in one of the coming Canberra shows.

Hi Lisa,

Good to see you over the weekend and that you are well.

This tree should be ready and on display at the 2013 AABC CBS Convention in Canberra in May 2013; possibly also the CBS show at Darramalan College on the 13th and 14th of October.

It shows that simple material given time and training can become something resaonable. I do enjoy growing trees from seed and cutting just as much as collected material.

Thanks for the update Grant. First time I've seen this progression, it was a great read. I'm glad to see the shari extended, I think it makes the story much more compelling. Not sure about the transposition of the Jin, but time will tell.

I'm always inspired by your passion for starting from scratch too. So many bonsai experts act as though only collected material can ever be great bonsai, and it's great to have proof otherwise. Thanks once more for sharing.

I must admit as I went through the photos and saw the removal of the jin I thought
But the new positioning seems to flow with the top of the pot so nicely, and after wiring the original jin still stands out, with the sharis of course tying everything together. Bold, brave, genius ... your posts are invaluable, a wonderful insight into styling

The Jins and shari are a work in progress.

I have "glued in" the Jin and will smooth it down into one new jin once the new exposed area has had time to recover.

I also need to work the stub left where I removed the old upright jin

I've never seen a Jin moved before Grant, definatley opened my eyes to some more possibilities.

How easy was it to move? did you use a specific type of glue?

Beautiful tree too, I'm not sure if I've said that already or not in the thread, but I love the progression thankyou!

There are a few fake or moved jins on some very well known Australian bonsai., not talking about Phoenix graft but actually inserted and/or glued in.

The can be moved easily; i just cut it off and then inserted it into a hole I drilled in to the new area.

I have only used "Kiyonal" as the glue as it was already a tight fit.

I will use a Dremel to smooth the entire new jin into one harmonious piece eventually.

A fantastic outcome after recent work, it was great to meet you in person, amongst others last weekend and also to see this tree in the flesh. One cannot appreciate its size in a photo. Look forward to seeing it again and hopefully you have the right pot for it then
