Thanks Symon . It’s not the best background for showing the trees but it was a long day and where I normally take photos was a bit too much effort . Up here rock literally grow out of the ground .

Yep , it just a matter of ‘ keeping nature’s time table ‘

Today I repotted a seiju . This tree was originally bought from Ray Nesci’s and then ground grown . I have taken quite a few cuttings , air layers and root cuttings from this tree so it’s been a fun project . I dug it last year because I needed the ground space and put into a garden sieve . I had planned to airlayer the smaller trunk off , but today I am left . The base is really nice and I am not sure that the taller trunk is worth keeping . I think I would rather keep the smaller trunk on the nice base . There would be a bit of reverse taper where the trunks join but not enough to worry about . Thoughts ?

Hey Sno, I'm having a vote for keeping the smaller trunk (a bit of carving and that reverse taper is a goner) and air layering the top section of the larger trunk. I think that part will make a good shohin in a short period of time. Two good trees out of one.

“Smaller trunk” definitely has a great profile and looks to be the choice. I agree with that I think, but you do have a strong lean forward which may require an angle change... or not (hard to say from photos). Nice base!

Gee photos and angles can be deceiving! The difference in interest and movement between the first photo which seems relatively straight to the following photos is very instructive ... the 3rd photo is the logical choice .... that said, I really like the second photo albeit the tree seems to be moving away at that angle - using that photo - perhaps tilt the tree forward and potentially turn the pot about 10 degrees anti-clockwise ... just another idea before you make more aggressive decisions.

Thanks for the feedback , I think the smaller trunk got the majority vote . When it warms up a bit I’ll follow Watto’s suggestion and airlayer the top off the the taller trunk . Always room for another shohin .
The next one is one of the root cuttings off the ‘seiju’ in around about way . I gave a tree to a friend a couple of years ago which was a cutting from the ‘seiju ‘ , at the time I repotted it for him and one of the roots I chopped offed I put around a pebble . Today I put that root cutting into its first pot .

This one is a Prunus cerasus , Sour Cherry . I dug it out of the garden a couple of years ago ,it was a sucker growing off a tree that I had chopped back to prepare to dig . The main tree had to go because even though the local distillery made some really nice shnapps off it ,every year the deer would prune the bottom and the tree slugs would trash the rest of it .
I was going to move this tree on but the main tree that I had cut back got a severe case of fungus and this tree has some of it growing on it too . I am not sure what type of fungus it is or how detrimental it is so I will keep it for now . I sterilise any tools after use on this tree. Today is its first day in a bonsai pot ( Salvo’s) . It’s tall because I want an image of the cherries hanging off it . If anyone knows the fungus I’d appreciate advice .

Looks like a Bracket fungus family to me. Id’ing which one maybe difficult.

I thought I'd show you want I've done with this little tree i got off you last year.

Bit of an angle change, when i exposed the roots a little more i realised it has another main root so i have widened the gap between these two main roots to create like a exposed root base and with a bit of a chop here n there it's come out alright

What do you reckon mate?
