Hi trident, not sure yet! If I decide to let it go it will probably go over to Adelaide for the convention sales area.

Thanks Pat, here's hoping she can repeat it!

People have been requesting larger pots, which is a little difficult until we get the larger kiln up and running, but here is a slightly larger round pot @ 280mm x 65mm.

The glaze(s?) on the rectangular pot are wonderful, subtle, complex and refined. Simple shape goes well underneath the glaze. Can't wait to see a good tree in it. Well done.

Did you make the mould yourself. I Have a couple of hobby ceramic moulds that I have tried it with, but I can't make the kidneys(scrapers) accurately enough. Any hints?

I don't think the Tokoname potters need to be worried Tien, don't cancel that order just yet!!

Hi Lynette, yeah I made the mould. Do your moulds have a top plate? I made a scraper to get the profile for the outside of the mould blank, i then made a scraper based off that for the inside but with a slightly thicker lip.

I've watched Reihou make a few pots using his moulds, he makes it look easy but in reality there is still a lot of skill involved I'm finding out! Still things to learn and improve on that's for sure.

Yes Jason the hobby ceramic moulds have a top and I tried to make the rib using a woodworking tool that shapes profiles, but when the clay was inside the profile was wrong, so I need to make an other with some clay in the mould. Still a long way from perfect,. I think it would need a lot of practise and we will never make the volumes they deal with. I am still making a mark on the bottom of the pot from the base of the rib, so I will round that a bit more. The old mounds that I have been using for some time, that I made, do not have a top and the top definitely makes it easier to use this method. I haven't been able to figure out how to make a top easily. I am seeing a friend in June and she might be able to show me a better way, as she has a lot more experience.
I bought some moulds from a hobby ceramic place that was closing down and the bonsai mould were included. They are a bit small though, so I would like some bigger ones. Have a look on e-bay for hobby ceramic sales.

Lynette, here is a photo I took of some of the moulds at Koyo pottery in Tokoname, I asked Juko San if he would sell any but was told a very definite no!



Here is Reihou smoothing the inside of a large oval with a profile tool.



I think the clay they use must be ideally suited as well - they get such a nice finish! I guess years of practise also helps!?

I made my profile tools out of some scrap acrylic sheet I had lying around, cut out the rough shape with a coping saw and then used files and sand paper to refine the shape.

Something different again from yesterdays firing - a nice little lotus shaped glazed pot.

I put this little prunus into one of Mum's lotus shaped pots the other day - the tree has a little ways to go but at least the pot looks good!
