Quicker clean up/wire in between work, so not as much time to consider everything but happy enough with this for now.
It's got a cracking base on it this tree.

Austrian Black Pine from the original seed batches after a clean up today.
It's a cool little tree in my book.

This is an Austrian Black Pine clump that was put together as a group of 5 seedlings when they were very first repotted about 3 months after germination. The trunks are nicely merged/fused now (7 years later) and it's time to really start to focus on locking in the design.
Austrian Black Pine feels like an under-used and under-appreciated species for bonsai here, but I'm into them!

Do you or anyone spray early Spring (from a preventive standpoint) for diseases such as needle casts?

Some sources are yay to spray to prevent/inhibit diseases and others say you shouldn't if the tree is already healthy and only spray if you have an issue with diseases already

I don't do any pre-emptive spraying to prevent needle cast etc in my trees.
I don't really see enough issues to justify that from either a time/cost or environmental perspective.

The clump suits Austrian black pines well. They’re a bit wilder than their Japanese counterparts IMO. Looking good!

The growth can be coarser and is a little less predictable. That makes creating smaller trees in particular a bit more complex, I’m still getting my head around it but I think I’m making some progress.

I spray preventatively every spring for needle cast.
The higher rainfall and humidity makes it necessary.

That's good to know and yes I did read higher humidity areas provided an environment where needle cast can be problematic or after periods rainfall.

First time one of my pines just got black soot all over in a matter of 1 week. There is also cotton fury little things over the trunk and bark.

Is it aphids and what is a good way to treat this?

I nuke everything with rogor.
