Have a look, the information is there and it works.

I'm more curious as to why :) I understand why they go after my tree's, with the mealy bug and all (that's now gone), but don't understand why they'd go after bags of soil that were sitting under the porch on concrete :lost:

There are plenty of ants around at the moment.

I am keeping pests (in general, but ants included) off the trees using Neem oil mixed with water in a spray bottle once or twice a week. Also soaking the plants in a tub that has some Neem oil in the water once every few weeks.

It's organic and safe for use around pets.

Having some real ant issues at the moment in my pots. Worried about them getting into some big trees ive just potted and read above that diatomite will deter them?

My new mix is about 50% diatomite, can anyone confirm whether this will work?

Cheers,

Kerrin

Lol, guess you'll find out...

A friend uses mouth wash in a squirt bottle as insect repellant (on ground, not on skin).

Thanks for bumping this, I've found a few nests myself. I've invested in antrid, but it would appear that they only come to the surface when I kick the pot.

I have heaps of trouble with ants
I use 40% diatomite in my mix and the ants still seem to nest in it
Been using Bayer ant and wasp powder from the green shed - a couple of puffs and no more ants

Cheers bamboos,

Where do you apply it and at any specific time.

Hi Kez
I puff a bit on after watering anywhere you see the ants I guess they take it back to the nest and its all over red rover
There are probably more environmentally friendly ways but I have pots I cannot move because of the weight so it's the only alternative for me

I've got a new invader this year - Pheidole megacephala aka big headed ant aka coastal ant. Normal controls (eg. antrid solution) are not working.

The WA Ag departmentrecommends hydramethylnon which is nasty stuff (and not cheap)- anyone have success with anything else?

"I love the smell of Napalm in the morning!"

Haha, no seriously I've only ever used Antex (spelling?) as they cannibalise their dead, poison one and they poison many AND take it into their nest! Perhaps my ants aren't as strong...

Coastal browns are not interested in the raw Antex product I had some success with mixing antex with cheese (The Big Green Box was nil stock of Amdro) and/or food oil but the ants gave up fairly quickly. May have worked but no controls to tell if successful.

And now too wet for Amdro but the rain is slowing the little devils down.

ps Masters stocks "David Greys" branded Amdro for a fraction of the cost of The Big Green Box. Hydramethylnon's also used in some Cockroach Gels, which might give me another string to the bow.

Old gent living at the back swears by Soap and boiling water poured down the gullet of their nest... Again, we don't have your ants in our back yard!

After somebody finally restocked a store in WA (in this case The Big Green Box won) I've got some nasty stuff.

Also had some warm (10C minimum) dry days and was able to apply it.

Amazingly effective.

Pool is full of dead ants. I know the wet, cold weather would have slowed them down but they're gone.

But, like most *cides (roundup I'm looking at you) there's way, way more than I need. Have been door knocking the neighbours to try and use it up.

OFFER - anyone over here need some, let me know (shoulda said this before the Bonsai workshop yesterday :palm: ). Can meet in CBD Mon/Fri or am in 6015/6019 most days.

I'd rather not be sending "white powder" through the mail  so it's pick up only.
