Prepare it now, if possible, by spading around it and backfill with some fert mixed in. Water if you can. Collect it anytime late September early October. Protect it from frost if forecast. Also leave the foliage on or at least half.

Sorry Rory, dead mate
didnt layer at all so i cut the top off to reduce height. It refused to bud back.

I've had the same happen to a nice thick trunked torulosa a few years ago too.
