i will give it a crack

be back soon with it, like i did say though there is potential for air layers and the nebari stumps, i did agree on that, as a trunk by itself how it is as of now in the original picture you have to admit there is work involved to get it to something worth while?

here ya go, it would only use the bottom section of the trunk and the nebari, but you would get several others with a decent sized trunk from air layering.

Bretts .

..sorry mate if i offended you.... I did not intend it, I honestly thought you were having a dig at the types of trees we thought had potential.
I too have some very ugly ducklings in my collection but could not bare to discard them due to personal reasons and sentimental value!

No worries Shannon

Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was an odd comment
I know this one is very ugly but I do like the quote "Bonsai does not have to be pretty"
I do have fun working with this tree. The picture I showed was from a couple of years ago. It has not progressed as far as I would like in the last couple of years but I am sure it will continue to be a break from the serious for years to come.

not bad jamie, i think maybe the canopy is a bit wide in proportion to the trunk, i'd maybe just narrow it a bit more..?

Not getting into the 'S' shape discussion but I reckon I would go for JayP's virt over the full-canopy look with this type of trunk.
Based on the reasoning that such a contorted trunk would usually be seen in a fig which has some stress trying to grow and maybe couldn't establish such a nice full-canopy due to this alteration of growth. Negative spaces in-between the pads work for me on this tree. Just my opinion, I love Ficus so much
