The cool has finally turned some more maples in the garden
I was a bit late getting the shade cover off this year. Coupled with the milder temps means the bonsai colours are not as good as usual. A few of the earlier ones just went from green to brown but a few are showing enough colour today for some photos.

Only 1 tree here gets decent colour reliable and that is my Liquid Ambar.

a few maples on my growing benches showing a little and my Parthenocissus semicordata are ok this year too but the leaves are big due to not being worked
A few Azaleas out and some Succulents colouring up OK too

The only Liquidamber I have is deep purple, almost looks black... Not the colour I was hoping for!

Does it go red later? Many black ones here do so.
This one was grown from seed many yonks ago and is reluable in its colour
I defo,iate in jan so i get new undamaged leaves that colour up well

A few leaves, literally.. with a bit of colour but all the rest are super dark. I'll let you know if it colours up or just drops its leaves.

Autumn colouring has been late in my yard, and the rotten summer we had means that most trees have suffered. Here are some whose leaves survived.
Crepe myrtle, mostly gone.
Older leaves on a Chinese quince.
A ratbag little English elm sucker.
Small Japanese maple -I have no idea why some leaves have coloured and some not.
Japanese maple - most of its leaves just burnt, but these still glow.
And some Euc shoots for treeman, because there are some things that exotics just can't do...

Tridents are picking up now even with my rubbish phone photos

Even managed some colour in Adelaide this year This is the trident group I started last winter https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/forum/view ... 00#p268400. Unfortunately, the best colour is at the back Contrasting with a lot of my tridents, my JMs show a surprising lack of crispyness this year I really like the copper coloured leaves and red stems of this individual. I hope it colours up the same way once it it is more developed.

One of my arakawa maples for future garden use getting some interesting orange and burgundy colours now. I seriously need to learn how to photograph autumn colours, this is quite washed out compared to how it actually looks.

Tim, if you get the sunlight coming through the leaves it can look good. Although it can be tricky getting the angle so the sun isn't directly into the lens.
(And how come you're wasting good Arakawa maples on the garden? There will never be enough cultivar maples in bonsai for my money.)

Thanks for the tip Gavin, i'll give it a go next time and see if i can come up with something a bit less arse-biscuits.

It's pretty boring as a plant this one shape wise, just a dead straight trunk, so it will be an air-layer donor tree in the future, but will never be a great bonsai, so best used in the garden i think. I have another arakawa i air-layered from this year, the layer seems to have been a success so there will be bonsai arakawa in the future.

Allegedly they grow from cutting too, so i'll take cuttings from it and give that a go as well this year. I'm doing the same with my Shishigashira maple, it's a motherstock donor tree for non-grafted stock from layers and cuttings.

That must be the stairway to Heaven.

In a house with two courtyards, I seem to have multiple micro-climates.

Here's my in-ground Sango Kaku - looks beautiful. As did the other JM in a big pot next to it a few weeks back. The JM forest is a bit patchy and looks better from afar - this and the English elm clumps behind sit under a big Chinese elm. Then out the back ... this row is thriving .... and the Tridents at the end of this row are yet to turn.

one of my 22 or so types of Japanese maples still holding on and my large ginko a few days away from its best. 24mm of rain and strong winds have extinguished some early .
