I wonder how many people here have had experience taking layers off J. maple cultivars? Especially a rare variegated form.

There is no guaranteed that it will layer well, if at all, some cultivars are very reluctant to send out roots, especially if they are mature enough to set seed.

Be safe and take a layer off a secondary branch, if you start on the trunk and it doesn't work you may well lose your tree. Even safer is to start propagating it with cuttings. Now is a good time to try them.

thats a good call paul, i didnt think about that or realise it was a rarer cultivar. hope he see this post before he trys it

i haven't done yet! Thank God! Its not a rare cultivatar. just a standard japanese maple. And i don't want to take an air layer so i can have more plants, its because its to tall and i want it to be shorter. But still thanx paul. I think i'll do it tomorrow? Could you use mesh instead of plastic?

I've done it! Finished the air layer! I used a plasticy rubber sheet. Now we play the waiting game........................................................this game sucks
