1/3 Zeolite ( Ray Nesci)
Essentially 2 bags diatomite and 1 bag of Zeolite, Mix them all up and that is what I use. Cost about $80 for 100L and as I reuse it 100% lasts forever adn costs very little. I keep it as simple as possible.
Others I know add 20% coco peat, and or some pumice.

Nope I do not bother washing, just pot up and then dunk the pot in water and let the fines drain out.
No "soil" either

Steven adds about 10% peat moss to his version,

I use mainly Searles or Osmocote, I prefer the latter, bonsai mix. Then add some other organics or grit, depending on the individual pot and also bonsai. You can make mistakes, like using kitty litter as drainage over holes (instead of sharp grit) and it set like mushy cement. Luckily I noticed it before real harm was done, and re -potted it immediately with well draining mix. I add perlite too. It helps maintain moisture and air. But bulk is the already mixed bonsai soil like

  Osmocote.
