When we next defoliate we can trim back long growth, light wire and then do it all again.

Yes,

Defoliate completely including all tip buds; then wire thoroughly into desired location. There will still be time to do another defoliation prior to end of the year.

You can leave a sacrifice branch if you need to thicken a particular spot and you should be able to remove it by the end of the growing season.

I shall defoliate my tree today as well.

Looks good. The new apex on the smaller trunk to the right seems to have thickened enough already. You could consider cutting it bcd to just above the 3 or more little new branches higher up. I would also pinch out the tips of those 3 or 4 bracnhes and hopefully it wail bud back lower down on there curved area.

Good,

You will be able to repot the tree next spring into a nice shallower pot and start to get more refined growth all over the tree. A few more wirings and defoliations over the next couple of years and you should have a very good bonsai. Keep up the good work.

If you are worried about high temps for the week you are away you can defoliate; this is a good water stress management tool as well as ramification etc.

Otherwise wait till you return,

Looking like mid to high 20's in Melbourne, so I think I'll let it be, water stress shouldn't be an issue. I'll defoliate around the 4th and post some proper pics.

Hi grant

I was wondering if you think I could get another defoliation in before it gets too late?
I'd like to get some more wire on in a few spots where it had started to cut in and had to be removed and it's pretty tricky to see what's happening amongst the foliage.

I did a defoliation about 3 weeks ago but it is definitely getting towards the end of the season in Canberra ; probably OK where you are but not guarantees.

OR do a partial defoliation by cutting back to one or two buds/nodes still with foliage on them and then cut back the compound leaf to one leaf set vertically and two leaf sets horizontally. Let me know if you don't understand and I will take a picture tomorrow.

I think I get it. But a picture is worth a thousand words.
Is it best to leave the foliage on the interior of the branch or the tips?
As I say, it's really just so I can get in and get some more wire on, I'm not expecting much more growth, I just don't want to weaken the tree too much heading out of the growing season.
