Hi Mel' , the base and narebri begins development in the first year with all my starter stock , branches are usually set with plenty of options in the 3rd , 4th and 5th years . The bases on these where flat cut like olives with a handsaw

I have sent dozens of tridents up to QLD but never seen a follow up pic or topic , keen to see how yours have developed up there .

Thanks Ian, as soon as I get a moment I'll take some shots for you. (I'm not sure they're absolutely thriving up here, but they're doing ok.)

Another couple more had a hack and chop today , in my spare time between jobs . Both these have had major height reduction and new leaders wired up .This one was savaged a bit more with 2 height reduction chops Both had major root pruning and re-potted .

Here is a few grow bed trunks that have had a hack and chop for another season These will be planted into planter bags , wired , then set into grow beds awaiting sale . Better get back out there and lay some more rocks .

Funny you should say that Melbrackstone - this seems to be my experience too. I have a few tridents I bought from alpineart and they haven't taken off like I would have expected. There was nothing wrong with the stock - they would have to be the best I have ever bought period. Great root work with lovely radial flare and nice trunks with taper. I know I haven't been fertilising anywhere near as much as I should be, but I still wonder if it isn't a bit too warm here in Brisvegas for tridents ?

Tony I think the ones that are doing marginally better are the ones in deeper pots or in pots that are sitting on the ground, where the roots can grow down. I wonder if we here in Brisbane should be looking more at the Taiwanese maple as our go to deciduous... I believe they're more sub-tropical...

It also could be that the quite severe difference between Ian's climate and ours will take a couple of years to recover from...

Will just have to see if we can keep them alive in the meantime.

I grew trident in rockhampton for 5 years both which ih hotter and more humid then brisbane. Did they thrive NO but they did survive. They grow quite well in rhe hinterlands i know

HI guys , maybe their suffering from fertilizer withdrawals , all my material and garden is regularly fertilized with Rustica Plus all year round .http://www.campbellsfert.com.au/product ... tica-plus/

Even my natives are fertilized with this product, the only plant here that doesn't appear like it are the Kangaroo Paws .

Numerous plants grown in the same sand trays /wet beds , can get a bit burnt or overdose and die if used heavy handed .as I sometimes do

Hi Mel , I constantly trim these back during the growing season , redirecting the energy to where it is needed and building the branches and ramification year by year . They are hungry little buggers and I see the difference If I miss a pot or two , even in a grow bed I make sure each trunk is fertilized separately .

That really does sound like where I've gone wrong then Ian, if they don't get enough feed, then they're clearly not thriving! Problem solved! Cheers.

Hi Mel , Rustica Plus is a compound granular 3-4 months slow release fert and I dose the trees the moment is disappears . I don't bury it so i can be seen basically disolving over time then add more when I think it needs it , that could be 6-8 weeks depending on the amount of watering being done . This year I only watered once a day , last year it was up to 3 Times a day so more ferts were used . An average year I use 50 -60 kg last year I used 90 kg .
