thanks heaps ken. i actually ended up potting up 3 trees today in staright diatomite so ill see how they goin it for now, good experiment i suppose

i roughly sieved it with a collinder with 4mm holes and got most of the dust out and separated the 1-4mm particles from the rest of it. it worked reasonably well but next time i visit rays ill definitely pick up a couple of sieves which will make the job a lot better and easier i bet, and at $20 that sounds pretty reasonable to me.
Thanks,
Hugh

Hi Hugh
I have heard people have poor performance with only Diatomite ( Check Out Grants Potting mix test thread as he confirms it there).
I was wondering if you could please post a link to this thread as I've had no luck finding it. I'm a newbie to this site, so not sure how to find things easily yet.
If you can't find it, could you maybe summarise it for me please? I've just tracked down a place that sells Diatomite in Adelaide, but was thinking of just using Diatomite with spag moss due to the dryer weather here. any ideas or suggestions would also be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Luke

I have never used Diatomite only so cannot comment on those aspects of the tests.
