That's pretty close to what I was thinking Jarrod but maybe a little too deep

Hi everyone,
I have already saved the pics, and if time permits, Ill try to do a virt as well, after all, why not?
After looking at the tree and virting it, perhaps I can REVERT it to the tree`s original form and into another pot ?
Regards,
Paul.

Here is a quick virt for ya Jarrod. I think you are right it is not that much too deep but I did slim the pot down just a little in the virt as well.

Hi Craig,
Perhas you are right ?
There is no need for ongoing photshopping or virts.
I only virted as a responce to Pups observations on the nebari.
I saw another tree within the elm.
I never envisioned the tree to be restyled, just offered what I saw within the tree.
Just that simple.
As for the choice and change of pot.
Seems Grant has made his decision.
Regards,
Paul.

I know what you say Paul but I am the opposite. I often think I look at Junipers with a deciduous mind.
I am not that keen on your virt ideas for the tree but it is nice to hear ideas out of the square

Hi,
The pot was one donated to the collection recently and was made in Australia but we are not sure who by.
I have argued for a bigger budget to purchase pots in the future so we can have a wider range to choose from.
However yes I do like the pot.

The roots have two areas, where you have a root sitting on top of another root which is very distracting, plus they are more of a Penjing appearance.
The roots are of most importance to the form of the tree, so we start right at the bottom and work up the tree.
So to give the appearance that the tree is very stable, you need good spreading roots grabbing the soil.
Not lifted from it, unless you are going for exposed roots, which this tree will not suit.

I'm not too keen on fanatically tidy root spread. If you lose or modify the left hand roots, you lose a lot of the dynamic movement at the base, to my mind. If you cover them up, to see what they'd look like if they were gone, the tree looks like it's toppling to the right. That striking doubled root balances the right lean of the tree.
Many thanks for all the virts - they are very good exercises for developing taste and judgement. And if we can mess with Grant's head in the meantime, all the better.
Although the blue pot is very fine, and the tree will look well in it, if I'm being critical, I'd agree with Brett - the incurved rim looks a tad fussy. In real life, of course, the effect may be entirely different.
A useful discussion.

I sit on the fence as far as the roots go? I do love a perfect set of roots but also get what Gavin is saying.
It seems as though the high root on the left would wire around to the front and down pretty easy in a repot (although there is a strange kink near the trunk?) and I think that would improve things alot.
I remember being surprised a couple of years ago when Grant said this was one of his favourite trees at the collection. Only because I did not realise he had such great taste
