I am not sure but I believe this has been discussed before. In 2007 Sep till Oct in Royal Kings Park on display was a traditional Japanese Garden created using only Australian plants.
It was created by one of Australia's Leading Japanese Garden designers commissioned by the Japanese Consulate in Perth.

His name Eiji Morozumi, past president of the Bonsai workshop.
It was on show for just one month for a cultural seminar being held in Perth.
It was then dismounted and is being stored at the Perth Zoo for future use.
Here are a few pictures that were taken, by my better half.

Here's a link to an explanation about the Nerima gardens.

It was built in 2001 and utilized aspects of what was already there.

Great detaled comments.

Absolutely agree with natives in Japanese style gardens. Just need the right ones in the right place.

Several Years ago I attended a Bonsai Demo at a garden Expo. I can't remember what it is called but it happens every year. A Sydney Bonsai Guy (Again sorry can't remember the name but someone else might?) did a talk on creating Japanese style gardens and using native plants where a bg part of the discussion.
The guy had done some impressive work as he showed in his slides but the main thing I remember was the story how a Japanes master got to see his work at some stage and the comment was short and sweet. "Not enough Pruning" :P

are these trees old enough to have been there before the garden was designed?

More than likely the trees did come before the garden and most likely that the garden was designed with the idea to intergrate them :tu2:
