What you will be looking at, is the brown underside of branches that are shooting directly upwards from the very base of the trunk. The sun doesn't penetrate this area and thus it is brown. The trunk is actually not seen in the first pic, as it is hidden by the branches starting so low.

Hi Sekans , mate the two different shades on the trunk can be put down to 2 reasons . Firstly A digital camera does lie , if the pics are taken at different times of the day or with different light/different days /times . Secondly most material is grown in a long term position and just watered , this was brown on one side grey on the other , the sun will bleach bark as will fertilizer hence a good reason to turn your tree's regularly , From memory the rear had all the scares from branch removal .I still struggle today with colour variations in most posts be it foliage bark or background .

This is a great way for beginners to learn. I myself have just gone the the big green shed and purchased a $10 Chinese juniper to practice wiring.

One a get a cheap plant to practice wiring on and second I may end up with a half decent bonsai.
