I am sometimes greatly impressed when I see trees people have grown at home without help.

Yes, lots of people do.
With the help from books and internet some do very well indeed.
With the help from clubs they would do even better, asking questions, seeing demonstrations, using club libraries and opportunities to access and buy new trees.

But you need time and the confidence to walk in!

I wish I had joined a club as soon as I got interested in bonsai: would've saved me a lot of heartache as well as a lot of money (when I think of what I wasted in places like Bunnings ....).

I have just checked this link,
Bonsai Society of Victoria does not meet in Auburn South (not for years)
they now meet in Kew (if you shop at Northland that is probably your closest club) also not listed is the Northern Suburbs bonsai club (a very small club which meets in Lalor)

I will get AABC to update their website.

that sounds the same as me, but i've only gotten serious about bonsai in the last 6 months.

Hope i can see some improvements with in the coming years

With the the internet, a few good basic books and more than a few years for the plant to teach you more than any book will YES you can teach yourself.

So, now, ... you sit and watch it grow for a decade or 3 and mature into that upright tree you want. Read read read then throw half of it away because the tree tells you its own story not what a book did.

Or you can join a club, see demonstrations, do workshops, go on digs or bonsai related trips, access the club library (many of these books are not available or hard to find & expensive) etc etc etc Best of all you get to shortcut the years of learning from books & listenin to your trees by hearing from other growers with experience growing the variety your tree is.

And guess what... You already did join a club, The one with the largest membership of any individual club ( I am guessing) and even better its available 24hrs a day 7 days a week AUSBONSAI

That booklet is an AABC production as well so it is the website that needs updating.
