I am interested to see an update on this fig. Did you remove the side branches?

Hi,

I did not get around to removing the side branches as I am in two minds about it still. Any thoughts? The growing medium that I planted it into in July has turned out to be rather baron and this fig (and a couple of others planted at that time) has not grown a lot since then so there is not a lot to photograph. I will repot it again shortly to get a bit better drainage so I can fertilise it more.

Ashley,
I like the tree as you have it. I would just encourage the central trunk to grow wildly and become dominant while restraining growth on the two lateral ones to allow them to become more branch-like.

I have to agree with Jerry. I would develop the tree with the side branches. it nearly looks like a triple trunk and would look stunning with lots of secondary's and heaps of ramification.

Hi Ash,

I disagree with the advice you have been given however I have much less experience than the people who have also advised. I think I would remove one side branch or both. I have a question regarding keeping both side branches and developing the centre as the main trunk. Would the side branches then be considered as bar branches and therefor a design flaw? Also if developing this as a broom style tree are there any rules regarding multiple branches coming from the one area?
