David I run a rare plants nursery here in Olinda I grow and sell plants which you will not find in your local nursery thats how I make my living, I sell a few bonsai through the clubs and too hardcore bonsai growers but not much to the general public.
Bodhi, I am glad you loved Japan, but would guess thats a given. The Japanese are such honest and generous people. My growing beds are not always so tidy but I have been having a major clean up the last few weeks as during the spring I have lots of groups coming through the garden. This works well for me as people see plants growing in situ then I can sell them those plants.
Brett, The trees hold their leaves are fagus crenata [japanese white beech]. The summer pruning I do for a couple of reasons, firstly to ensure there are not multiple growths from any one point as they will develop lumps very quickly. Then I like to open the trees up so I prune to allow light to get into the lower sections of the trees and lastly sometimes I cut a tree back for taper and train up a new leader.

Very nice Craig. Are you adding anything (ie. potting mix) to your beds or is that just good old Olinda dirt?

Hi Jeff, I have big compost bins in which goes all the nursery waste as well as all the usual. This gets dug into the beds at rootpruning time, lots of it. I am a bit of a fanatic when it comes to soil, to me good soil is everything. With regards to the white beech at some stage in the future I will sell some but they are very much a finite resource so I want to spend some years growing them first to work out which ones are the most promising.
