Day 2 of BBTH is under way and we have had some great demo's - more info to come on those soon

Leigh Taafe and I are currently doing a joint workshop - Leigh is making over a Juniper and I am teaching people a bit about the inner workings of AusBonsai. So, what better way to do it than posting pictures (in real time) of Leighs demo

Okay, Leigh has a 30 + year old Shimpaku that he is converting from informal upright to semi cascade. Leigh had previously wired the tree so he just had to remove some redundant branches and shape. Sounds easy doesn't it So I don't bore everyone here... I'll continue this later.

What happened to leighs tree?. That was a 30 year old, small Shimpaku. a rarity.

Something special happened to Leigh's (your old) Shinpaku Grant. Pic's will be posted soon but I'm sure you will agree he has done justice to the foundations you grew.

What where the silent Auction trees like? I reckon the Lilly pilly I got last time was almost as good as winning the raffle

Report of the day.

This morning had a presentation on Penjing from Phillippe Tot from the Lingnan Penjing Academy which included discussions on chinese thought and the understanding of energy flows. Unfortunately none of the photos I took worked out, but the presentation was very thought provoking and Phillippe was a very interesting presenter and a nice bloke to talk to over lunch.

Alex Bennett transformed a JBP he had and wired it up using anealed copper wire. His style and skill was evident and I really enjoyed hearing how he approaches the process of design, then he moved onto moving a fairly heavy branch and protecting it with wire braces, for this he needed an able helper, but got me instead.

Then Lee Wright covered off how to combine, stand and pot and tree in a display. Aside from having a very impressive array of trees Lee showed an amazing variety of stands and must have a very big cupboard at home to fit them all. Lees thoughts have certainly left me with a lot more appreciation for the effect a stand can have.

Ric Roberts repotted an evergreen Trident Maple. and I must confess I was busy gossiping and aside from a photo very early on I didnt really get to see this presentation. Sorry Ric.

After lunch Leigh Taffe and Steven did a tag team with Steven showing how Ausbonsai works and Leigh restyling the juniper. Leigh managed to get a lot of work done as Steven did all the talking. AND we discovered various ways to get rid of Rats and protect citrus trees.

Certainly Leigh showed he is a very skilled artist and Steven opened a few eyes on how to do things on the net and explained how important this resource can be for all of us.

I cannot recommend this weekend highly enough, the ability to mix with Bonsai folk and to listen to some interesting presentations and simply be bonsai for a couple of days has really recharged my desire to get out the back and bend a few pines.

As an aside Id like to thank all the people I met this weekend who made me feel so welcome and were very inclusive and helpful I learnt more than I expected and I made some new friends. Not many days where I can say that.

I did not get any photos of the Auction trees Sorry

There was a Very nice Casuarina that I think maybe Steven got but there was very keen interest in that one and also a Crab apple won by Our mate Hartos

Cannot remember what else was there
I did not come home with anything Except for the Satsuki Azaleas that Leigh brought up for me

I will repot them on tuesday If I remember to get clinton to bring some pots to School then

Thanks Steven for a great presention how Ausbonsai works and for your generosity in maintaining the site, you certainly showed what a valuable resource it is for the Bonsai community to be able to get advice and connect with other Bonsai people from all around the world and to share knowledge.
The badge was also a great way of identifying other Ausbonsai members.
