Mel I was thinking maybe the "mountain", the pot and the tree all point in the same direction which maybe a bit too much "sameness". A semi-cascade tree with some variation away from the straight up and down may work?
Indeed, I hadn't considered a semi cascade! That, or even a full cascade could give you the impact needed! If the tree was flowering, even better! Do you have an Acacia howittii?

Pearcy and R3 the changing of the mountain colour certainly makes the tree the focal point (which is of course what we want) and the tree leaning outside the mountain does make you focus on the tree. Thanks for the input.
Mel I do have a howittii and that may have worked well too. Next year there may be another mad display setup but this one certainly has created some thought. Thanks

Forgot to mention Watto I was thinking a juniper (or maybe a white pine?) given they are trees that natively originate from the mountains, just to keep the whole thing in context but of course there are other options in that regard ... possibly native, but I have no idea what that might be.
Looking forward to next year's mad display! Love it ...

I think junipers would work but I do like Mel's idea of an Aus native.

I hadn't really thought about it but it may be possible to grow some moss on the lower portion of the "mountain".
