Thanks for the photos Sno. I really like that clump style that you started the thread with and as has been mentioned - lovely pots across the range. Cool experimentation too.

KCR ,you and Kirky can laugh now but in twenty years time when I put it into a bonsai pot you guys will be wishing you had started one too .
I’ll mix it up a bit now .
This is a Rhododendron which has a blue flower . I was ground growing and it was developing a really nice flared nebari . Unfortunately one of the cuts I did rotted half the base off . I dug it up and it was in a nursery flat for a couple of years . I found this great pot from Regwac which reminds me of an old Italian terracotta saucer . So today I put the two together . The dead wood has been treated with lime sulfur and then rubbed with charcoal to soften the look . Should flower soon but this year I’ll knock them off .

Chinese elm broom . This was ground grown from a cutting to get trunk size and then into a nursery flat for a couple of years to get the roots right . First time in a bonsai pot , Japanese .

That's a great broom. Did it retain its leaves through winter in your part of the country ?

Good elm. Visually a good trunk to foliage ratio, I like it.

It’s been in a neighbours glasshouse since May and it didn’t drop any leaves . I actually potted this one up a week or so ago and I brought it home this morning . The buds are starting to swell which is early compared to others growing at home . I am going to defoliate it one night soon so I can sort out the branch structure a bit . Snow this weekend , could be a big dump .

This one is a Trident Maple I got off Shibui at one of the Canberra shows . Tridents don’t grow well up here , the spring frosts knock them around too much . They tend to shoot earlier than the Japanese Maples . This has been in my neighbour’s glasshouse which is on the north facing side of the valley (heaps of sun ) . So it is shooting very early .
I put in a thread graft two years ago to try and correct the inverse taper Issue . The donor branch grows very strongly on the ‘in side ‘ but refuses to grow on the ‘outside ‘ section of the graft . I have defoliated the ‘inside ‘ section a few times but that hasn’t encouraged the ‘outside ‘ to grow . Any ideas .
The nebari is coming along nicely ,I got some seedlings off Shibui to approach graft some roots on to it I have removed one from the back (sorry I forgot to take a photo ) the others need more time . It has been growing in a nursery flat pot and it went back in to it after a root prune .
