Even airlayers are a waste of time. You spend a few months keeping it alive to then spend another 10 years growing in taper. Take cuttings, fuse them, easy. In that same 10 years you'll have better tree's than the taperless log you would have otherwise. Forget the bulls**t and do whats needed.

Pup, hope you guys don't give Deans a hard time, he can only work with the tools he's got and it's the boys on the field that have to perform. Something that Matt Gittau didn't do against the Scotts............even I fell off the couch when he missed that last one!

the one in the back left could have poential hacked back hard a grow whole new canopy in 5 years or so may b more in nz but they dont need huge taper low and wide spread looks good the nebari gives the impression of taper

all three across the back could have that done and good trees could be made, but there are several points on all of them that could be used in airial layers.

Asus101....fuse-cuttings??? ....10years?? You want to wait that long?

When you have around 500-1000 med-large stock figs to play with, you learn what not to waste your time on.
These have potential if cut back and ground grown . 4-5 years good tree!

i know mate, but i was looking at the positive side of it by talking about the airlayers. i think you could get several trees out of them. sorry

Using 75 long lanky cuttings you get results. We just dont have the humidity to get it done faster. Its all in bonsai focus 122. I would count that ten years from cutting to fine ramifacation.
They use similar techniques in Taiwan, they just use airial roots.

You've got to have some imagination with figs like these.

I just got of the phone to Sinclair and yes Pup, they are chinese imports. They have there own import and quarantine facility and distribute to garden centres, Mitre 10 and Bunnies.
They assured me that they are not imported as Bonsai, merely as texture and focus plants. Apparently they are popular in offices and modern style settings

However as I gather from some of you, some of them have got bonsai potential in one way or another, be it air layering cuttings or future growing/styling.

They are all Microcarpa species.

Re borrowing players Bonscythe, can't see it happening in union, League certainly but then again these players are a different breed........

Pup, the Welsh can smell victory and will try every trick in the book, they might even play some rugby . Victory and Deans might have to pack his bags after been surgically removed from John O Neills hip.

My Grandson in law gives me plenty so I have to fire where I can.

Why not ask about getting some imported though them it might work. Remember Ficus can be bare rooted, In hot house conditions they grow pretty quick. I think in WA it is a 4 month stint in Quarantine.

Good luck with the wobblies against the fearsome Welsh I'd say the All Blacks will have a tough one against the froggs.
It'll be all over after that and people will get all excited about hitting a ball with a piece of willow Not me though.

hey your only bound by your own imagination mate, if you can't see any potential in the trees back left and back right then you my friend have a pretty bleak future in bonsai sorry to say, mate i guarantee you that one of those two particular trees in my posession for 2-3years and you would be eating your words! if you look a bit more closely you will notice that the 's' shape you are talking about is actually 3 dimensional movent, so in retrospect to your smart ass comment in fact an 's' shaped elm can have great movement as long as it is not 2 dimensional, like any informaly styled bonsai and this is a basic fundamental (pre schoolers stuff)! what shape do you look for in a tree..? think about it..! admittedly the middle one is a bit of an eye sore and the small ones i wouldn't bother with but there is definitely at least two good potential bonsai there, i'm not saying they look good now but they definitley could in the right hands. you see my friend your mind is already holding you back creatively, these sort of challenges you should tackle head on and you will become a better stylist for it and just in case your sitting there reading this saying to yourself this guy dosn't know what he is talking about here are some pictures. one is a willow leaf fig and the rest are elms, now i want you to take a look at the trunk line and tell me what shape you see..?
