It is smaller then it looks. The tree itself like 220mm the pot just pushes it out of shohin class i guess. Should be naked in a week or so ill get picks. I love the pot too it was one of those ive got the tree for you as soon as i saw it.

Is the large tree behind the Trident on a rock? Not so much root over rock rather tree devouring rock! Or is it just a trick of the camera. Whatever it is.... it looks very interesting Matthew.

Exposed root over rock. Roots go down 50cm. Its a premma japonica

amazing how long the colour has lasted on this guy. I think its gotten deeper if anything .

After a heap of wind yestaday little guy lost most of his clothes. This trident ramifys very easy and needs thinning out each year . Every scar has healed already. Not bad for a tree 10 years old.

Its looking beautiful Matt. The tridents I have from you are all naked now. A shame they cant have the color for longer before dropping leaves.

TimS and I were talking about how tridents ramify so quickly earlier today.

I think this is an important thread/statement for newer folk to bonsai. Look what is achievable in 10 years... very cool. Sure Matthew is very skilled at this craft. I reckon he's making use of every one of those 120 months - whereas a clown like me would waste months, years and tears stuffing around. Point being, if you are new to the hobby/addiction - and you are a fast learner... look, listen, go to clubs, practice ... don't be afraid to make mistakes which will mean turning green healthy stuff brown and dead-like every now and then. Don't lose heart - cool stuff can happen quicker than you might imagine.... and in writing that, I am saying that as much to myself as anyone else. And to sound like the old bloke I am becoming .... 10 years really is the blink of an eye.

Correct . picking species that can give you something achievable in a relatively short period of time I think is key to starting out . Trident maples, elms , figs these species grow quick , handle heavy root pruning and can be cut back to bare trunks . Great for impatient people just starting out.
I reserve that pines and most junipers should proberly be attempted once the grower has some knowledge and more importance patience as a pine tree in a pot will take years to develop a thick , barked trunk unless you know about sacrifice branching etc .
Also general rule developing shohin trees take less time to have something of a certain level where a large cedar may take 30 years plus to get to a simular level.
When I first started out I wanted everything now , would buy ANYTHING large with a big trunk regardless of how crappy the root or branch structure was, I killed plenty of trees believe me and spent a lot of money doing so. As you progress your tastes change as does your scrutiny on suitable material.

Having the gym closed has given me the extra time needed with all the bonsai and quality time with Jane.
She has been my training partner and she got 70 push ups in one go! Not bad for an 8 year old.
