The one I am growing here in SA does.

Hey Mike, I hope you and your family are well. A sample of a few is no test but ....they are not readily back-budding old wood for me.... my swamp paper barks and roer gums go nuts on old wood, and my kunzea are more likely to sprout from the base or a near cut/break point. These however seem to push out close to the cut only (for me) ... and they are super healthy but much slower growers than the other species mention too. I hope, like others are noting, that mine start to sprout on older wood.Image

I gave these another haircut a month or so back and they are fine but not as vigorous as the swampy's, gums or kunzea. That said, they appreciated the cut and they bouncing back nicely and a few little bits of back budding here and there. My apologies for the in-situ photo - I could not be bothered moving the heavy pot to the white wall.

A light trim for this only - the Moonah is soooo much slower than the Swamp Paperbarks... some back budding but not much.

Very true MJL but have a look back at where you were not so long ago at the start of this thread ... it's going forward no doubt... good things come to those who wait! ;)

Cheers R3 - noting too that some of the change come from me adding trees and taking this entry out of the competition - much to Rory's disdain back in the day!

Yeah... there is that! I just went back to the first pic without getting too bogged down in the detail (aka important bits). Still... even those little sticks have developed, but I agree... Moonah can be a bit slow. Oh well, Just remember bonsai is mostly about the journey given that you never really get to the destination!

I noted Rory reminded us all about the Natural Competition and to get updated photos by the end of October. Again - this one is self-DQ'd but ...because I have taken photos of the other trees in this comp, I'll drop another update for this set too.

In reality - all I am doing is letting this group take off in spring, there's been some light trimming but not much. Simply just water and conditioning/feed; swapping between Seasol and Powerfeed liquids. ( I just looked back and there has been quite a bit of growth over the past 6 weeks. These trees are very healthy.

It is close to my favourite native group ... I play golf (well when we are not locked down) ... my ball ends up in native scrub (a lot) and those photos underneath these trees looks very reminiscent of that type of growth.

Also, to respond to a question from freeman earlier in this thread. I am getting significant growth on old wood after a heavy cutting/trunk chops on other moonah's. (Albeit 'old' wood is misleading - the little trees I am chopping back are only 5 years old themselves.)

Another cut back in preparation for repotting.

I know that self praise is no praise (so forgive me) but I do like the way these are coming along. Indeed, I am really enjoying all the native groups .... high maintenance but satisfy nonetheless.

Please forgive the rocks - they simply hold the trees in place. I’m usually pretty hard on myself but I love where this is going for such a young group. There’s no doubt I draw inspiration from the many Moonah on the Mornington Penninsula/golf ... and the combo of breaks and cuts is resulting in some unplanned twists and turns - which I like. Image

Sorry to hijack your thread Mark, but this seemed the most appropriate place to post this small tree which I repotted and cut back recently. From seed in 2016 and growing in a tube since then.

Hey Terry - sorry for note responding, I just saw your note. Yes, they bud back but not guaranteed in my experience but I am glad your seedlings are progressing well. Moonah are so much slower to grow than other natives ....well at least in my narrow field of experience.

Here's my April update for the competition - albeit, I DQ'd this entry by adding some trees after the due date. So really it's just a update for my records and any interested. Again ... I really feel like this is a reasonable natural groups - for a man-made compilation. I particularly
like the view from underneath.

Bid trim today so they do look sparse. :-)

The slower growth habit means that these are not nearly as thick as my other entries in this competition. Still, I do live them.
