Thanks @shibui. As always a font of knowledge. Now that the "flower" has grown a bit I can see it's actually a clump of aerial roots. I was thrown off because they are the same brilliant red as the flowers and the aerial roots I pick off are usually white before I get them. Now the trick is to get them off without wrecking my nice bark.
