the tree is small, not to big for now you might drown it. im going to use a small poly box or 300mm orchid pot and upsize when the tree is ready. i have found that its not how big the pot but is more so the conditions are right. now that is here in my enviro. ps plenty time to upsize with these sticks

I will get some good ssoil and just put it into a larger pot for the time being.
Do you guys use any special soils for pines?
Another thing, would it be advisable to add something to the soil such as chook poo to add some nutrients, or will this burn the roots?

I have found the Pine Masters at the stone lantern. That will be on my xmas list

pine bark mulch fine shredded, orchid mix, scoria 7mm. equal parts. will be a great mix for gowing on. good fert only! i have already said on your thread but will get into it in more detail here later.

since Ant has said jump in ill chuck a couple of pics up. Two trees here grown the same way 2 years apart . The larger one has had its sacrifices cut, hard prune back on primary branches winter just gone and is now pushing candles. I will thin out and wire the little branches next fall. The younger pine i didnt put movement in (naughty) but i think it will make a nice little shohin one day. The brown needle tips are from cutting needles for light but it is pushing a hell of a lot of buds i have to select and thin. i have about 40 like this but with movement .

fly you are in a beautiful position with this tree, to have those 2 low branches on a very healthy tree! great choices to have here. my common sense tells me have no fear to go the hack and only leave the 2 bottom branches, for that is where there is a magic future tree. especially with your eye for setting up trees. when is the next repot due? do you have a size in mind for future?

mate purchased for cambewarra bonsai some time ago. It was grown the same way as the other 2 smaller ones as most pines that came from there were. Ive been experimenting with when to break candles on pines and on one i have gotton candles all about even size on the tree opening about 1 inch tall I think im onto something with that tree.

i agree with ant that basically what you have is two nice low braches which could become the future tree and treat the rest of the tree as a large sacrifice branch as most of it is a bit leggy ( not alot of growth in close)im no good with vituals but i reckon the right first branch would become your new tree. It has good branchlets to choose from . just work on powering the top of the tree which you seem to be doing and keep that low branch healthy. you could prob wire it into position for movement and select what you will keep on it now.

all in all it will be a great thing to see each other's trees develope on this thread. sharing each others methods and advice will go a long way to jbp's in australia. even though they are not native they are still the kings of bonsai.
