i was thinking that, rusting would be a major problem wouldnt it????

twenty years is a long time... would a pin nail be better.... than again i dont partiularly want to be going near my trees with a hammer

Steel will rust will it not. Not good for the xylem phloem. which is the life blood of the tree. It might not happen straight away but it will happen.
I have seen it after 5 years.
I use only stainless steel or pure brass nails or screws.
It leaches like the Arsenic in treated pine logs of old. It is a shame when you see your work suddenly looking sick, and you have nurtured it with all the right things.

being a metal worker yourself pup you would know steel doesnt even take that long to rust when it is under moist conditions, i could see major problems in using steel or galvanized because even that can leach chemicals

Yes any corrosion will kill .Brass coated screws will break down hence solid brass or stainless and embed the head below the bark gently so as not to split the trunk and you wont see them next year .Cheers

Only as big as needed if it needs to be 20mms then that is the size you need try to get the thinnest you can. Making sure as has been pointed out Pure brass or stainless steel. If the stainless on the left are cheaper than those on the right. It is because they are inferior so go with quality, you will not regret it.

thanks pup, would of done that anyways, its annoying trying to put a screw in and then stripping the head,
would i pilot hole be a good idea, it would help avoid splitting of the trunk wouldnt it. being a steel worker i dont worry bout cracking and stuff, i just fix it with a welder. wood on the other hand is very different...

Pilot holes in timber is always a good Idea.
