First word of the quote was variable which I thought meant variation like some variation in foliage size,and form.
As mine was named in 2011 by a botanist that visited. I thought I would be right.

However some one has a 100 percent that's different I must be wrong.

So I will be happy in the knowledge I have a Melaleuca species that is different.

Peter. I have no idea but if I was trying to key out the species I would assume the leaf shape is important in id

Thanks for all the help guys much appreciated, i'm not to bothered with exact species and I think i'll go with Rory's advice and cut back to some foliage, got a sick child on my hands at present but when I can i'll try take some better photos of the foliage. Pup when it comes to caring for mels I'll follow any advice you can give as I've heard about your knowledge on them

Hi Peter . Sorry , the last photo you posted doesn't help in the id . Can you remember the color of the flower ?
This is an image of Melaleuca gibbosa (which is also the sort of image that makes identifying easier)

Your tree reminded me of Melaleuca gibbosa because of the sort of weeping habit of of the branches seen in the left hand side ,back of your fourth photo as seen here . Which is similar to this image . This image was taken from here .http://www.cradocnursery.com.au/plants/ ... bosa.shtml
And because it has 'ovate ' shaped leaves .

That certainly looks like the tree I have , i must apologise though as I cannot say i've ever seen it flower but will certainly keep an eye out for when it does ,by the way when do they flower

Should flower towards the end of spring if you let it grow .

Any updates?

I have one which appears to be the sameit has had an aggressive prune this week. When I asked for help with ID a few months ago the rapid response was m.decussate but I looked at decussate in a nursery and felt the foliage was very similar but larger than mine. Looking at m.gibbosa now which might be the answer, unfortunately I have pruned away any chance of flowers in the near future

If you look the post " how much root can i cut " it's the same tree, i just repotted it into a good Bonsai soil and have started to wire it into a bit of shape. I did get one new shoot lower down but not in the mature bark. When i get a chance I'll take some update photos and post them
