Hi all,

Looking at making some changes during a repot of this group during winter.( if the damn leaves ever fall off)

Will be drawing on the discussion in this thread so far plus some ideas I have. In addition I will probably try and do it at the school of bonsai class that I attend on thursday nights.

Just wanted to show what I have stock wise and see if there is any other input from a few members on currently discussing tridents????

My group may not look exactly like this but this idea is what I am after. The 2 secondary trees next to each other will be the trees at the front from the existing group. The new primary will be the one in the 8 inch pot that I have purchased. The others will be the scattering of trees around these 3. Does that sound right? I need that definition between the three groups which is what is currently missing.

A lot of people just bundle trees together, and i have been guilty of that. I feel a good forest needs space and i think the space is sometimes more important than the trees. Spacing to walk through, or sit in, or a small paddock etc. If you can keep the space and join the canopy it can be quite impressive.

Not that i am any expert but id like to see a bit more movement in some of the smaller trees trunks, personally i think it would give a slight more interest to draw in the eye and create movement

True Dan,
but most forests are pretty well straight up! Its a competition thing in the forests and the tree that is tallest will get the most sun! As this forest grouping is intended to emulate that feeling, I can't see that trees with lots of movement would work ... Single trees, however, are a whole other story!

Movement in the smaller trees would not be natural. The idea that the smaller trees have more movement when the larger ones are straight wouldn't make sense if they are all growing in that same environment. If all the trees had that movement it might work though. Unfortunately too late for this group

So a post of what I put together on the weekend for some more discussion.

I only added the large trident and split the current into 2 minor groups. Not sure I need the additional trees?????? I don't want to end up with the same problem as last time with no space between.

It looks like they are planted pretty far back in the pot, is this on purpose?
