I love them too and for quite a while now, been developing mine from a Trident maple whip since 2005

I am grating some branching in along the middle section, but need to get an updated photo too.
This on was Jan 2013.

Lookin good. But maybe time to for a good thin out? There's somthing about formal uprights that give an impression of majetsy like no other style can. They kind of make you look up into the tree and make you feel small.
Keep em coming!

Start with stock. Liquidambar styraciflua stock in training. From wild seedling a few years back. It will take time

Yep and this is the time to wire the trunk so it is dead eye dick straight.

Very good

I have just finished wiring and repotted it, the existing branches are starting to ramify nicely so hope that the grafts take off this summer so I can work get the holes filled in soon .

The tree is developing some nice ramification now and is wired every year.
ps forgot to add, the green tape on some places are to mark branches and shoots a "DO NOT CUT". They are being grown to use for grafts and I select a few shoots to keep for that purpose. I have 3 thread grafts on the tree now, and 2 more shoots as backups in case they fail and need to replace them

if the grafts all take then I will remove the unneeded ones.

It's developing nicely. Interesting to see it in a few years! Have you considered a few sacrifice branches off the lower ones to speed up thickening?

I have, but I do not want to thicken the lower branches where they come off the trunk. As the trunk is slender( an understatement) i want to keep those branches in tune with it.
I have had a few lower branches over its time, but remove them after a year or 2 so they do not swell any particular area of the trunk.
