Very timely update, for me at least .

I have been reading up on English Oaks, and i have found that "sudden death" is not uncommon after rootwork. mine are in their second year from seed, and i have tried working on the roots for one of them after it has leafed out on the basis that if the tree is actively growing it is more likely to recover. though, seeing as though youve reduced yours from a 45l bag to that pot gives me some reassurance. how have you been dealing with the powedery mildew? it doesnt look like you get it at all. ive had to constantly spray mine with fungicide, and ive kept them in a fairly 'airy' location with lots of sun.

Hi Naimul , mate I have killed a few of these root pruning . This was removed from the 45 litre bag in mid winter and severely reduced to fit the pot . The trimming takes place during the growing season and it resides in full sun with plenty of air movement , possible the windiest place in the yard . I have sprayed everything here with Rose Shield over the last few seasons and have very few issues , it is due for a follow up spray when i find the time .

Nice development Alps
I have a couple and do not have much trouble with mound.
They are not crammed in with other trees and in full sun. They are on poles and not benches so they do not stay humid around them thru the day

This had a root prune and re-pot back into its comfy home . It has been soaking for a week to fill it with water now its back into the pond for another week.I will see how it reacts to a spring root prune then give it a small trim .

How’s you tree, Alpine? I’ve read that they prefer a spring root prune and that they get a lot of die back when root pruned while dormant. Did yours react well to the spring root prune

Hi Beano , sorry about the late reply,. Bonsai has taken a back seat over the last few months with medical issues and an Op' that went pear shaped rendering me unable to even water my collection , hence major losses have occurred . Even in the medical profession some think their guru's , when they are mere medical practitioners , safer to go to a vet .

Back to business , It didn't flinch at all , sprouted new shoots and produced a few fruit as well . It has been in a water bath / pond since it was root pruned and is still in there and growing well .

I will have a play with a few tree's today something that hasn't happened for a while .

Sorry to hear that Ian. Health is everything and when u struggle to do even mundane tasks it must be depressing and debilitating. Im sure your looking on the bright side. Do you have a rehab program in place.

Hi Matthew , mate no rehab program , not enough hours in the day for that . "Done bun can't be undone" so its upward and onward towards progress .

Catching up on work is the priority , I'm 4 months behind with building work , Bonsai can always be re-styled or hack and chopped back into shape or used for Phoenix Grafts .

The losses can't be replaced as most were collected pines and junipers . I have a plan to install a watering system just in case I'm out of action some time in the future. A stock reduction will also take place over the next few months as the collection had grown out to around 2000 plants again .

My health is back up to where it should be so its full steam ahead , here for a good time not a long time .

2000 trees? No wonder you find them difficult to look after when not in good health. Hope you recover well & quickly.

This has had a 30% reduction all over several months ago which has produced 4 new shoots from the dormant reluctant buds in the center of the leader .Plenty of new shoots all over the branches so it is heading in the right direction . I will re-pot this down a few sizes to slow it down next season .

Hi Greg27 surely a tab or button could be installed ,this link works but i have to return to this topic to access it . I go to quick links and my posts and it sends me up shari creek , I type in a topic and it can't find it makes for a lot of work .
