Yes I added drainage holes to the box. Sorry for not answering that, I thought perhaps it was too important to assume I wouldn't do so at that point.
Thanks for everyone's help here. I think I'll be alright to look after it for a while now.

Chloe, how did your tree fare during the year??

I got given one as a present and believe i have the same issues with a root coming out of a drainage hole. The pot it's in is tiny and I have a bigger bonsai pot for it. Should I just move it into the new pot with the existing soil it's in and fill the rest with fresh?

Hi camo and welcome. Yes just slip pot it into a bigger pot and fill around the root ball with potting mix. I usually give seasol every day for a week at least after repotting and keep in a shaded spot. When you are more experienced you can do an out of season repot without fear.

Thanks Tony, would you say they require the same lighting as a Japanese Juniper? I have one that was already a bonsai and doing well where I have it placed as well as a 23yr old pot belly fig that I was given 2 years ago. I've only just brought it back to life as I wasn't caring for it properly.

Tridents are much hardier that Japanese maples. Here in brissy I can keep tridents in full sun but the Japanese maples have to be kept in shade otherwise the leaves suffer from burn. If it is in a shallow pot gradually move it into the sun and keep an eye on it. The biggest danger would be the pot drying out.

Thanks for the help, I just slip potted it into the bigger pot. But after my trip to bunnings I beleive its an Ash Maple
