Yes I do have some of my natives in this mix, a casuarina, black wattles, sand paper fig and calistamon. My bonsai are not in full sun due to many overhanging trees. Would water at least once per day, being in the morning. Try to fertalise weekly during the growing

I believe Ken P, one of the moderators uses this mix on most of his plants. It is from reading his many posts that made me want to try it. I have found that it does not encourage as many weeds and those that do grw are very easy to remove.

Awesome to hear you are having great results Fae:-)
lack of weeds is another benefit I can attribute to Diatomite.

Hi Lellul
Check out the 2 wiki articles in mentioned and particularly the links from them. Heaps of great info.
As always, do not rush into anything and change over slowly so you can learn how your trees work in alternate mixes

It is my first time with zeolite so I went easy with it. I added only 5% to 95% commercial bonsai mix. I would like to get my hands on diatomite and perlite if anyone knows where to get some in Melbourne.

Hi
Just looked on Enfield Produce's web site, they do stock both perlite and diatomite (seperately). They are located in Sydney, not sure if they transport to other states.

You could look up the website and google the brands and see if these companies have Melbourne outlets.

Thanks for that!

I plan on making a trip over to enfield sometime in the next week as its only 20 mins from me...

Anyone wouldn't happen to know a common product name that zeolite has? (IE Diatomite is sold as a product called Kleensorb)

Cheers

Hey yea I saw that I will be grabbing some diatomite this week but I was wondering if there is perhaps a branded version of Zeolite that I may not know about that is easily attainable through like your local flower power or bunnings under the name of like "zeokleensorb" kitty litter

I couldnt find Zeolite on the Enfield site, only their pre-made bonsai mix made note that part of it contained zeolite.

Cheers

Kleensorb/Diatomaceous earth... Any ideas on where to get?

Post by Isitangus »

Some pool shops stock bulk zeolite-15kg or bigger bags. Sometimes called zeopure or zelbrite. (Used as a substitute for sand in filters). Price is approx $21 for $15kg depending on the shop etc

Exactly the info I was after....

Gives me something to start searching for locally before I start ordering items from places and paying for shipping!

Hello to everyone in this Forum - I've just joined Ausbonsai having re-discovered my love for bonsai and potted moss landscapes.

My question is for Canberra: does anyone know where in Canberra to get diatomaceous earth suitable for bonsai? I was thinking of mixing this with crushed fermented charcoal (as in soaked in rotting plant slops to inoculate the charcoal with microbes).

Also (perhaps I should write this in a new post), does anyone know how to propagate seeds of the hawthorn tree (Crataegus)? There are some gorgeous specimens in Canberra along Northbourne Avenue currently fruiting, so I've collected and cleaned a handful of seeds. The natural shapes of these trees are straight out of a Chinese silk scroll painting. They're just begging to be planted on a miniature rocky crag.
BTW, would anyone else like me to collect some Crataegus seeds for them?

Cheers
