Thankyou for all of your comments.

Raging Bull – I purchased the stand at a secondhand market in Nara, Japan.

tgooboon - for ramification I allow the tree to grow for say 6 to twelve leaves, harden off, and then prune the shoots to the base leaf or first pair of leaves and repeat. They ramify reasonably quickly. They also sprout well of semi-mature branches if the tree is growing strongly and gets a prune.

GavinG – I will make the crown fairly sparse foliage clouds to be consistent with the bunjin shape and branch positions – but enough to feed the tree and maintain its health. The most important thing is that the tree stays living! The first re-sprout after winter I let get the shaggiest.

cheers, Ash
