yep it was that bloke in hay that taught this originally. he is the ash man.

I agree with all the comments about getting good colour. I have also observed that a tree that is a little pot bound will give good colour (and usually earlier than otherwise). Another observation is a tree that is watered too much in autumn will not give very good colour at all.

So the trident maples take full sun even on the 40 deg days, even the fresh growth. ?
I had heard mid summer for defoliation but I was wondering if that was consistant with the hot climate.

I was worried about getting leaf burn on the Japanese Maple so for the 4 days of 40 degrees I moved it into the shade for display at the collection and moved it again at 3pm each day into more shade for the afternoon.

The Trident maple was fully leafed out with its new growth and it had hardened off by mid January which was when the 40 degree days were, hence no problem. If you had recently defoliated and new growth was emerging and you were about to get 40 degrees plus then I would protect it for those few days but then back out into the sun, or its normal position anyhow.

The Ash just couldn't get enough heat; it lapped it up.

On 40 degree plus days just keep plenty of water up to your plants.

I have visited Ron P in Mildura and I don't know how he can stand that brutal heat. I have seen the result on his trees.

I won't visit him or Don D at Hay in summer! It's just too (aussie expletive deleted) hot, especially when the winds come.

4 days in a row outside in Canberra at 40 degrees plus was enough for me.

Come and visit him now.... and while your down here come on over the border for a short visit, you can even bring Ron (if he can remember how to actually get here, he forgets every time...)
