I have always re potted when the tree needs it not when it is the Optimum season. As in Australia our conditions are so different to the North.

We have a longer growing season, as always regardless of when you re pot, the most importnat part of the process is the all important after care.
If that is followed there should be no problems.

I have re potted Ficus in the middle of winter to prove a point, on after care with no problems what so ever.

Took me longer to repot

I remember the days growing up in Subiaco when Winter was very common, days of rain and storms and it was cold. The weather has changed somewhat.

Thanks for the work Alpine. It is close although the foliage is bluer but the sun, as you said, was in the way. I need a name and this could be it.

If this foliage was trimmed as for bonsai it would look very close to a Shimpaku type folige soft fluffy more rounded like a cloud not like the Sabina which is course and harsh and quite flat if trimmed for Bonsai . Hope this helps .

I just returned from Japan, and I was told by one of the well knowing Bonsai Masters Verbatim: I have been to Australia many time! In Sydney, Melbourne , Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, as long your Temp is not above 26 degree! You can report any time during the year all of your Bonsai trees. The only exception is, after Trimming and rewiring,
wait 5 to 6 weeks before you transfer your Tree into a Bonsai Pot.

Thanks Karl and yes, the trees all survived well and two are now living with new owners.

I routinely repot my pines and Junipers in autumn; from the last week of February till the end of March; a window of about 6 weeks. I recently purchased 32 Japanese Black Pine and repotted 29 of them. All have survived, greened up and the buds have plumped up ready for winter then spring.

In the last week of February I check to see if there are any temps forecast over 30 degrees for the next week and if it looks like no heat wave coming I start the repotting. Winter starts early in Canberra, which is why I start repotting in late Feb. It gives the trees a couple of months to settle in, firm up and get some root growth before the sub zero temps start.

In Sydney and Melbourne you would have a much longer "ideal" window to repot.

We had a 1 degree night a few weeks ago but averaging 6 to 12 degrees overnight at the moment. except for a light slip pot it is too late for a major repot now in Canberra; I will wait now till spring.
