Pups Melaleuca at the NBPCA

Post by NBPCA »

Hi all,

Another tree from the collection.
IMG_0774.JPG
This one was donated by Pup.

A Melaleuca rhaphiophylla. Size is not always obvious so I have included an old, bald headed guy for comparison.

The tree is 120cm high, just 5 cm taller than Craig Ws Banksia.

So you can see they are big trees.

Enjoy

It is hard to really get a feeling of the tree from a photo. This tree is lovely in the flesh/bark/leaf.

It was a very generous donation by Mr and Mrs Pup and their two trees were the very first two offered when the collection was announced.(technically one other came first but it was from within the fraternity who were getting the project started and was obtained from a very well known gentleman in Canberra who died not very long after, Joe Micalef, but we gaveMr and Mrs Pups trees no 1 and no 2 in the numbering system to honour their donation )

Again many thanks.

G,day Graig, well this tree was one of two, collected on the 20Th February 1995. From our Sons farm in Denmark South West Australia.
It was growing in a fresh water swamp. It has been grazed by the Roo's Horses and Cow's. It was about the height that Grant said in the other post  7 foot high and about 5 across,( 152 cms wide 213 cms high ).
My son and I dug the two of them, he asked if I wanted more I said we would wait and see if these survived.
We took them back to the Barn. I trimmed the roots, and cut off superfluous branches to get them into the wagon for the drive home to Perth 475 klms away. It was soaked in a solution of Superthrive for a week while we had our visit, the ratio was 10mls to 10 litres. Its approx 40 years old going on growth of others around.

The other one is in the competition being run here. Both were on display at the AABC convention in Fremantle in 2001.
Again the reason for remembering the date so well it was my late fathers birthday.

Oh by the way I was told, they do not make good Bonsai, will not survive, do not like there roots touched will not shoot back when pruned. They will die, oh yes and do not fertilise
Cheers :) Pup

Glad you exploded some Myths there Pup. Any photos around the collection time of those trees. Or maybe you could post the "slugs" or "stumps" of Melaleuca that you have been collecting over there.

Grant the tree's were pre digi days, also when we were on the quad bikes no camera. So unfortunately none of those, but I do have shots of the local site.
So if that is OK I will post them some of the tree's from this site appear here.

Mrs Pup is looking though her Albums to see if she can find some early pics for me to scan. You will have to be patient though cos when she gets them out she spends hour's reminiscing. Then I cop a why have we not seen them for :!: :!: .

Cheers :) Pup
