Carved Silver Edged Elm

Post by MelaQuin »

Here's a deciduous tree with a large amount of carving. No incursion was made into living wood on this subject. It almost died from lack of water but with proper care it eventually rose like Lazarus [most of it at any rate]. The initial work was to establish the extent of the deadwood by gradually removing the bark. At this stage the tree has not been lime sulphured to allow any nicks to the live cambium to seal. The owner says the spring growth has been excellent and it is shaping up well. I don't have a current photo of it as it is not my tree and was just given to me to carve.

You are right EXCEPT the fact that the top section leans back, too markedly to ignore. This could only be countered if the foliage developed so well that it concealed it but due to the size of the tree I don't think this will happen. For my talents to be on display I would love it to be so but the tree dictates the final turn and it has more grace and presence with the carving to the back.

To the best of my knowledge the tree will be going up for sale next September for about $200 if not sold before. The 'about' will depend on the tree's development between now and the time it is sold.

There is plenty of potential there.
