Cut branch stumps what is the best season to do it?

Hello everyone!

I have a question that is troubling me for the past few days….
Ok let’s say I have few tree where I removed branches and left a stump for wiring reason and/or hoping new shoots would grow from it…
Now I want to remove it entirely, apply cut paste and let the tree callus it over…
Now the question is when do I cut it? So what is the best season to cut it?
Now with my limited knowledge everything leads me to think that the best season would be spring or anyway the growing season, given that is when the plant has most of the energy and the capacity to callus it over quickly…

Is this correct?

What if I do it now or later on in autumn? What will it be the outcome? I would imagine that the plant will still try to callus it over but it would be much slower and it will cover much less surface before stopping the process?

What type of tree are/have you cutting back? Do you have a photo?

Hi Jarad,

It was more of a generic question, are you saying that each tree species would have a different rule?
I can take few photos and it is for different trees: Ginkgo, crab apples, cherry, Fuchsia, Olive and trident Maple...

It will also depends on wether the stump is still a live?? It the stump has died you can cut it back to the trunk at any time.
It will not callose over because it is dead, unless to cut to live tissue it wont heal over the cut.
Next would be Pines in the growing season they bleed so you would want to cut in winter and seal the cut.
Japanese Maples also bleed so best time for them would be Autumn and again seal the cuts. Crab Apple, Cherry I would do late winter, Olives Summer. Tridents I have done anytime of year with out any problems.

and I thought there was a rule for all... it doesn't help that I decided to have some many different type of trees...

I don't follow any seasonal pattern. If stubs need to be reduced then reduce them and seal the wound. It does not seem to matter what time of year it is.
Japanese maples do bleed when cut late winter or around bud burst but that's only if you're pruning a live branch. I have not seen this happen when reducing older stubs.
I often prune pines in summer and have not noticed them bleed afterwards.

Cherry and a few other stone fruit are prone to gummosis and other diseases that enter wounds so avoid pruning in winter when the wound does not heal quick but sealing the cuts should prevent infection.

Gingko can be pruned any time of year. I have not noticed any reaction to pruning at any time of year.
